BFBIU Annual Review: Reflections on this challenging year

News

From emergency war responses to ground-breaking research, new campus buildings, and UK events, BFBIU’s Annual Review is a collection of stories charting the journey Bar-Ilan has been on this past year, a year like no other.

Since 7th October, Bar-Ilan has been faced with a double challenge: how to meet student’s and society’s urgent needs, whilst also advancing research and innovation. Bar-Ilan responded on every front…

on the front line, the generosity of our UK friends and supporters allowed us to provide IDF medics with portable ultrasound machines.

on the home front, Bar-Ilan’s mobile optometry clinic, trauma hotline, and school for evacuees provided critical support for the victims of 7th October.

on the international front, a Bar-Ilan Faculty of Law researcher led the fight for global recognition of Hamas’ sexual crimes.

and on the academic front, with UK support, we ensured our 5,000 serving students received the emotional, financial, and learning support needed both to readjust to civilian life and resume their studies successfully.

Bar-Ilan is now at an inflection point. New medical, engineering and nanotech buildings are being constructed on campuses in Ramat Gan and Safed. Work is about to start on a ‘bio-convergence campus’ in Ramat Gan’s Health-Tech Valley, a joint endeavour with the Sheba Medical Centre. “Mega” research projects, such as the National Institute for Energy Research and the Russell Berrie Galilee Diabetes SPHERE, are shifting into high gear. And the Jonathan Sacks Institute is about to welcome its first cohort of students in October.

With courage and perseverance, Bar-Ilan is playing an integral role in turning a crisis and a country around. And the UK Jewish community is playing its part.

For over 60 years, UK supporters have played a pivotal role in Bar-Ilan’s success. This past year has been no exception. We have staged events, awards, and trips, and have been delighted to welcome Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis on to Bar-Ilan’s Council of Founders. The bond between the UK and Bar-Ilan is now stronger than ever.
